THE Methodist Welfare Services' (MWS) Charity Golf Fellowship has not lost its power to gather Methodists and friends for a round on the greens. More than 200 avid golfers descended on Raffles Country Club's Lake Coure on July 10 to take part in this year's fund-raising tournament.

Close to 60 golfers willingly took the early morning flights as there were not enough flights in the afternoon to accommodate them.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, who was this year's Guest-of-Honour, joined the players in the afternoon and during the fellowship dinner at which he gave away the prizes.

The Dr Tay Eng Soon Cup was won by the men's team from Paya Lebar Methodist Church (PLMC), while the Rosalyn Tay Cup went to the ladies' team from Kampong Kapor Methodist Church (KKMC). The top male golfer was Mr John Ong Hui Boon from PLMC and the top female golfer was Ms Ruth Wee from KKMC.

Convened by KKMC, there were many firsts in this year's charity golf tournament. Mr Jimmy Fu donated the first challenge trophy for a Pastors' Challenge and the Rev Dr Norman Wong was its first recipient for the "Best Stableford Score for Pastor".

Entertainment was provided throughout the dinner by the Seletar Country Club Band with Ms Rosita Ng and Ms Phyllis Wong performing some crowd favourites. Another first was the Emcee's call for the diners to sing onstage for a donation of $50. The Rev Dr Kang Ho Soon, Pastor-in-Charge of KKMC, was persuaded to sing when Mr Rodney Tan donated $500.

With such good support, the event raised about $215,000 nett. This will go towards funding services and programmes for the MWS' 5,500 beneficiaries.

First organised in 1989, the MWS Charity Golf Fellowship is the most-awaited fund-raising event in the MWS calendar. Methodist churches take turns to organise the event, bringing together Methodists and friends with a passion for golf to help raise funds to provide services and programmes for the disadvantaged.
Grace Methodist Church will convene next year's tournament.
