Double joy at ACJC as two win President's
Scholarship 2006
By MALINI LIM
THIS year, Anglo-Chinese Junior
College (ACJC) won top national honours in education when two
of its students were awarded the prestigious President's Scholarship.
The two, Miss Tan Li Feng and Miss Chai Jishan,
were selected from a group of 39 top students in Singapore.
There are two other President's Scholars this year, and both were
from Raffles Junior College.
Jishan was awarded the President's Scholarship cum Overseas Merit
Scholarship (Foreign Service). She is going to study Biochemistry
at Oxford University.
The other recipient, Li Feng, received both the President's Scholarship
cum Local Merit Scholarship, as well as the Lee Kuan Yew Award
for Mathematics and Science 2006. A former student of Methodist
Girls' School, she is currently studying Medicine at the National
University of Singapore.
While in college, both of them have been exemplary not only in
their academic endeavours, but upheld an illustrious co-curricular
programme covering a spectrum of activities from debates to students'
council work to tennis. Above all, they exuded dynamic personalities
and extraordinary leadership skills, united with a selfless heart.
Li Feng is a true embodiment of the college mission and value
system. As the President of the Students' Council (2004-2005),
a recipient of the Ministry of Education Pre-University Scholarships
(2004-2005), a President's Guide and a representative at the World
School Debating Championships in Canada 2005, she has consistently
excelled in living out a life with noble ambition and character
for the service of God and nation, and she pursued truth and displayed
the courage to seek and conquer in all her undertakings.
While in college, Li Feng has garnered a huge collection of academic
accolades, won the Bronze medallion in the International Chemistry
Olympiad 2005, emerged the top Science student at ACJC for the
GCE "A" level Examination 2005, and fittingly honoured
as a member of the Principal's Honour Roll. She was appointed
as the Valedictorian on Honours' Night 2005.

Jishan was another scholastic student who served as an excellent
role model to her cohort. She was a recipient of the MOE Pre-University
Scholarship (2004-2005) and did Singapore proud in the Taiwan
International Science Fair 2005 by winning the 2nd prize for her
project in the Biochemistry catergory.
In addition, she represented Singapore
in Table-Tennis at the 2002 SEA Games Juniors and captained the
ACJC Table-Tennis team. Her quick thinking, eloquence, inter-personal
skills evolved into sound leadership qualities that made her the
outstanding Secretary of the ACJC Students' Council (2004-2005).
She often went beyond the call of duty in her service and extended
her kindness to others unconditionally.
Upon graduation, Jishan enlisted in the Singapore Armed Forces
for six months this year, where she completed the Basic Military
Training and the Officer's Cadet Course.
It is truly our blessing to have witnessed fine examples of what
it takes to be real winners, in achievements and character. These
students ran their race with vigour, faith and hope. They have
experienced the culture and ethos of the ACS spirit and are now
in search of a good tertiary education. We thank God for making
all things beautiful in His time.
