Methodist School of Music

presenting Festival of Psalms

THE METHODIST SCHOOL OF MUSIC (MSM) is presenting a Festival of Psalms to be held at Barker Road Methodist Church on Sept 25 at 7.30 pm.

The Festival of Psalms is based on the book Voicing God’s Psalms by Calvin Serveeld: “Serveeld sets the biblical psalms in historical context, highlights the rough and tender tenor of God’s psalms and offers concrete suggestions for helping these psalms come alive in our private and public worship today.”

The MSM believes that it needs to revisit the psalms, its richness in form and content.

In this festival, it hopes to promote the use of psalms as liturgical prayers. The psalms will be presented in various forms, in the ways they can be performed during worship.

The Festival of Psalms will be directed by Jonathan Velasco, a highly sought-after choral conductor, clinician and adjudicator. Velasco regularly holds choral clinics and workshops in Manila, the United States, Germany, France, Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore.

The choral anthems to be sung at the Festival will include Psalm 90 (by Michael Burkhardt), and  Psalms 100 and 130 (by John Rutter).
